Cardinals Fall Just Short Against Rams in MEC Semis

WISE, Va. – In the final five minutes, the Cardinals never stopped charging ahead. Trailing by three goals with under four minutes, Wheeling Jesuit scored twice in the final 37 seconds, but fell just short against Shepherd, 12-11, in the Mountain East Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament Semifinals Friday afternoon.

WJU (6-10) netted four of the first five second-half goals and took an 8-6 lead with 14:19 left in the match. The Rams (8-6) rattled off the next five scores over an eight-minute period to make it 11-8, and never trailed again. Markie Wright and Gionna Allsandro both found the net with 37 and six seconds left in the match, but ran out of time in an attempt to retie the contest.
 
Wright led the Cardinals with a 'hat trick' of three goals and scooped four ground balls. Freshmen Allesandro and Bethany Wallingford added two goals apiece.  

Lyndsay Carpenter shot in one goal to go with four ground balls and four causes turnovers, while Kate Calder scored once and had two ground balls. Kori Hickman assisted on three goals and scored one goal.

Ally Coggins rounded out the WJU scorers with one. Taylor Quigg had six ground balls on the team's defense and goalie Elizabeth Hanks stopped six Rams shots.
 
Sarah Wendt led Shepherd with five goals.
 
WJU did outshoot Shepherd by a 34-31 margin and held the same difference on shots on goal, 22-19.
 
WJU started off strong with the first scores of the game from Wallingford and Carpenter right after each other at 25:57 and 25:45. Shepherd struck back with three consecutive tallies. Wright netted her first of three off a Hickman pass to make it 4-4 with 9:19 left, but the Rams edged ahead, 5-4, with less than two minutes before halftime.

Behind 10-8, WJU appeared to pull within a goal from Allesandro, but it was ruled her stick was illegal and the goal was waived off. Shepherd followed with its 11th goal to make it 11-8 to make the WJU rally attempt all the tougher by an extra goal.
