Cardinals Break Out the Bats, Sweep Blue Knights on Senior Day

WHEELING, W.Va. – In the last home appearance by the senior class, the Cardinals bats were alive. Every Wheeling Jesuit starter lined a hit in a Senior Day opening 13-1 five-inning win over Urbana, before it pulled out a 4-3 late contest for the sweep.

The Cardinals (24-22/20-11 Mountain East Conference North) wasted no time to put runs on the scoreboard. After a Cassie Holstein single and a Brianna Grimes walk, Mallory Chapman blasted a three-run home run to left field. Chapman added a run-scoring single as part of a three-run second and double in a seven-run fourth of the opener. WJU had six of its nine starters have multiple hits.

Leading 3-2 in the home sixth, Courtney Rogers was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Alaina York to make it 4-2. WJU would need the insurance run as Urbana (9-39/2-18 MEC North) scored one time in top of the seventh, but an unusual double play and then a hard line drive caught by winning pitcher Erin Unterbrink closed the door.

WJU totaled 17 runs and 26 hits over the 12 innings. Chapman missed hitting for the cycle in the first game where she went 3 for 4 with a 3-run homer, a double and an RBI single. She added a run-scoring double in the late game.

Chapman was one of the four Senior Day veterans honored before the game. She was joined by four-year members Victoria Scott, Holstein and Carolyn Blattler. The four Cardinals helped the program amass over 100 wins and four 20-win seasons over their time in the Red and Gold uniforms.

Holstein went 4 for 7 herself with three runs, a double, and three stolen bases. Scott was 3 for 7 with a double and four RBI, while Blattler was hit by a pitch in a pinch hitting appearance.

Grimes added three hits, a double, three RBI and four runs. Molly Welsh and Jackie Cramer also finished with three hits.

Chapman won her 16th game in the opener where she allowed only four hits, no earned run and struck out four. Unterbrink (8-9) struck out five  and allowed only a fourth-inning solo home run.

WJU will now be off until it heads south to Salem, Virginia for the MEC Tournament starting next Friday (May 4).
