Chapman Shuts Out UVa.-Wise, Powers Cardinals to Upset of Favorite Bobcats at MEC Tourney

SALEM, Va. – The most decorated senior Cardinal made her case she should have been the Conference's Player of the Year on Friday. Mallory Chapman fired a seven-hit of UVa.-Wise, 1-0, before she powered Wheeling Jesuit to a 9-2 upset of favorite West Virginia Wesleyan, 9-2, with a grand slam and six RBI at the Mountain East Conference Softball Championship Tournament.

In a scoreless game in the top of the third against the Cavalier to start the day, Chapman singled to move Cassie Holstein, who walked, to second base with two outs. Courtney Rogers followed with a run-scoring hit to left center to make it 1-0. Chapman took care of the rest as she allowed three singles over the final four innings, but the WJU defense behind her helped with double plays in each of the fourth and fifth frames. Holstein gave Chapman the victory by gunning out the UVa.-Wise runner attempting to move from first to third on single to left field to end the game.

After one out in a scoreless top of the second, Molly Welsh started the big inning with a double down the left field line. Heather Pinney and Jackie Cramer followed with infield hits to load the bases. Alaina York lined the ball to left for a RBI fielder's choice. Holstein reloaded the bases with two outs with a bunt single and Brianna Grimes singled home the second WJU score. With two strikes, Chapman drove a high looping grand slam home run to right center for a six-run frame. The Bobcats scored twice in the third, but Chapman added a two-run single in the fourth and Rogers a sac fly for what would be the eventual final of 9-2.

With the two victories, WJU moves on to the MEC Semifinals against West Virginia State, which defeated Shepherd 6-3 in the other, Winner's Bracket contest at noon on Saturday.

The WJU win over West Virginia Wesleyan was its first in the series in over eight years and snapped at least a 12-game losing streak.

The four-time All-MEC performer, Chapman, finished the day with two pitching wins and 3 for 6 at the plate with the grand slam and six RBI. Mallory (18-13) logged 14 frames where she allowed 13 hits, two earned runs, five walks and five strikeouts.

Grimes posted a 3 for 4 second game with two runs and a RBI. Holstein had two game-two singles and scored three times for the day. Rogers drove in a pair of runs despite only the game one RBI single.

Welsh added a double, while Pinney singled in each contest. York, who scored twice, and Cramer completed the Cardinals with hits.
