Cardinals Send 12 Seniors out Victorious, Pound Battlers

WHEELING, W.Va. – A dozen Cardinals senior rode the early excitement wave of goals and never looked back. Wheeling Jesuit scored the day's first five goals and sent its large group of seniors out victoriously in a 24-5 going away win over Alderson Broaddus men's lacrosse.

With the win, the Cardinals (6-8) clinched their inaugural Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship Tournament spot. WJU improved to 4-3 in the league and finished fourth for the final playoff spot. WJU moves on to Thursday's G-MAC Semifinals against Regular Season Champion Seton Hill in a noon match at Greensburg, Pa. Second seed Lake Erie College takes on third seed Mercyhurst in the other Semifinal to follow at 3 p.m.

The Cardinals netted the match's first five goals over the opening 7:40 as seniors Matt Lee, Michael Stillings, Dereck Downs and Michael Jablonski acounted four of the five. Leading 7-1 and only 19 seconds into the second period, Downs netted a goal, which was followed by another score from Lee 21 seconds later. WJU continued to apply pressure to the Battlers (3-8, 2-5 G-MAC) and rattled the cage a total of 24 times. Long range shots from Alderson Broaddus' Jordan Look with four goals seemed the only way to get past an active Cardinal defense.

WJU honored its 12 seniors – David Corral, McLean Fitzmartin, Jake Lilly, Xavier Sanchez, Lee, Jablonski, Scotty Gwyn, Downs, Fernando Martinez, Nick Csenar, Stillings and Connor Buzzelli – before their last match on the home field started.

Jordan Getz paced the Cardinal attack with six goals. The senior duo Downs and Lee both scored five times with Downs assisting on four other scores. Jablonski found the back of the net twice in his final match. Conner Calmbacher, Corral, Phillip Burns, Oscar Ortega, Michael Schonhiutt and Stillings all contributed a goal.

In the Cardinal net, Lilly and PJ Campion secured the home team with Lilly saving eight shots on goal. Gwyn assisted on one finish, scooped up 13 ground balls and forced six turnovers on the Battlers.
