Finch Fires 5-Hit Shutout, Cardinals Second-Game Rally Falls Run Shy

URBANA, Ohio – The senior lefty showed his top form Saturday. Michael Finch fired a five-hit shutout for a 1-0 opening win, before a Wheeling Jesuit seventh-inning rally fell a run shy, 6-5, in the late game at Urbana.

With his best start of the year, Finch allowed four hits over the opening four frames, but only a lead-off single in the seventh in his complete-game shutout. A two-out Hayden Hizer single to left field plated Adam Dennison, who singled, in the top of the first as the game lone run in the Cardinals (5-31/4-22 Mountain East Conference North) win.

After Urbana (8-32/8-18 MEC North) raced out to a 6-0 lead with a five-run third inning in game two. Jeff Patrick put WJU on the scoreboard with an RBI single to right field to score Hizer in the fourth. In their final at bat, the Cardinals took advantage of a trio of Blue Knights error for their first two runs. Dennison and Logan Schickler followed with back-to-back run-scoring singles to pull within a run, 6-5. Urbana, though, retired the next two WJU hitters to end the big rally.

Finch struck out six Blue Knight hitters over seven innings where he gave up five hits and two walks.

At the plate, Dennison paced the Cardinals with a double, two singles, a run and one RBI. Hizer added a pair of singles with a run and an RBI. Schickler produced two singles in the second contest with an RBI.

Bobby Truelove, Tristan Grimes, Patrick and TJ Jacob finished with a single apiece.

WJU finishes its four-game series on Sunday, April 29, against Urbana starting at 1 p.m.
