Patrick Bunt Single Spells Extra-Frame WJU Win, End Half Inning Shy of Sweep

URBANA, Ohio – In its best weekend results of the season, the Cardinals came with a half inning of winning the four-game set. Jeff Patrick drove in his second run of the game in the top of the ninth to give Wheeling Jesuit a 4-3 win in nine-inning extra frames in the opener, before Urbana used a sac fly in the home seventh for the late-game 4-3 victory and split.

After he drove in the second fifth-inning Cardinals (6-32/5-23 Mountain East Conference North) run with a single, Patrick laid down a bunt single to score the racing Logan Schickler to make it 4-3 in the visiting ninth. Nick Luciano completed his fourth inning of relief work by retiring the Blue Knights (9-33/9-19 MEC North) in the home ninth to end the extra-inning affair.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the fourth of the late game, Matt Angelini and TJ Jacob lined run-scoring singles for a WJU lead, 3-2. The scored remained in the visitors' favor until Urbana's final at bat. The Blue Knights received a lead-off single and back-to-back walks to load the bases. Following a strikeout, Urbana edged out the win with a RBI walk and then a game-winning sacrifice fly to right field for the 4-3 final.

Of the 10 Cardinals hits, Patrick, Angelini, Hayden Hizer and Brad Trescott recorded two each. Patrick drove in two, with both Angelini and Trescott finishing with one RBI.

Adam Dennison and Jacob accounted for the other two WJU singles.

Luciano allowed only four hits with one walk and a strikeout to take his season record to 2-3. Josh Bell pitched a solid opening five frames where he allowed three runs in game one. Tanner Evans suffered the late loss, but scattered seven hits over the first six frames.

WJU completes its 2018 campaign in its annual split four-game series against rival West Liberty. The Cardinals open the series Friday afternoon, May 4, starting on the Hilltoppers' field with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
