Cardinals Key Hits in Opening Victory, Fall Shy Late Against Falcons

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – On a great afternoon the diamond, Wheeling Jesuit received a key two-run single by Cassie Holstein in the 5-1 opener, but Fairmont State made an early two-run homer stand up for the 2-1 late softball win.

Leading 1-0 in the top of the fourth, Alaina York drew a bases-loaded walk. Holstein followed with her two-run single to center field to make it 4-0. Victoria Scott added a two-out, fifth-frame hit. Fairmont State (21-21/17-11 Mountain East Conference North) pushed across a single score in the seventh, but was not enough.

The Falcons took advantage of a two-out hit batter as Andie Baughman raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run for a 2-0 lead. The Cardinals (22-21/18-10 MEC North) pulled within a run on a Victoria Scott single to left to plate Mallory Chapman, who walked. Scott led off the top of the seventh with a single, was sacrificed to second, but was stranded there to end the contest.

Scott went 4 for 5 in the twinbill with a double, a run and two RBI. Courtney Rogers added a double and single, while Jackie Cramer singled two times.

Chapman improved to 15-12 on the year when she allowed only one earned run, three hits and two walks, while striking out seven in the opener. Erin Unterbrink gave up only two hits, which both runners score, and fanned two without a walk.

WJU begins its final two regular season doubleheader pair on Friday afternoon, April 27, at Notre Dame College. First pitch set for 2 p.m.
