No. 19 Lakers Defeat Cardinals

ERIE, Pa.  – On a Saturday afternoon, the No. 19 ranked Mercyhurst defeated the Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse team by a final score of 17-9.

Mercyhurst (8-4, 4-2 Great Midwest Athletic Conference) led with four goals at the end of the first quarter before Dereck Downs fired the first Cardinals (5-8, 3-3 G-MAC) goal home off a quick pass from his teammate Michael Jablonski. Travis and Jordan Getz followed with another two scores to contest the Lakers lead at the halftime, 8-3. 

Matt Lee opened the third quarter with a double on the Cardinals side, but the Lakers fought back to keep the advantage, 14-8. During the final 15:00, Phillip Burns recorded a goal for WJU, but the Mercyhurst offense rattled-off three goals, securing the 17-9 victory.

In the visiting offense, Matt Lee and Dereck Downs both netted two goals and Downs assisted on another. McLean Fitzmartin, Jordan Getz, Travis Getz and Mike Stillings fired home a goal each with the Getz brothers adding a pair of assists.

Goalie Jake Lilly saved 11 Lakers shots on goal.

WJU returns back to action next Saturday, April 28, when it hosts Alderson Broaddus University at 1 p.m. at Bishop Schmitt Field.
