Cardinals Surge to Lead, Hold On Over Rams

WHEELING, W.Va. – After having a tough opening 20 minutes, the Cardinals tighten and turned the tables. Wheeling Jesuit scored six-straight goals over a 26:43 period to take the lead and held off a final Shepherd charge in the final minute for the 9-8 women's lacrosse match Friday afternoon.

Trailing 5-2, Hayley Holmquist (9:44) and Paige Orbell (0:11) netted the final scores of the first half to pull to WJU (4-9/2-1 Mountain East Conference) within a goal. The Cardinals continued their surge with the opening four goals of the latter stanza for a three score lead, 8-5, over the Rams (5-5/1-1 MEC). Shepherd scored with 1:01 remaining, but could not secure the tying tally in the waning seconds.

Orbell and Holmquist led the WJU attack with three-goal 'hat tricks.' Ally Coggins started the second-half scoring with a goal to go with an assist. Taylor Booth and Kori Hickman added second period scores as well.

On the WJU defense, the home combination of Sarah Artzer, Lyndsay Carpenter and Taylor Quigg held down the Rams. Artzer scooped six ground balls and caused five turnovers, while Carpenter had five of each. Quigg chipped in three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

In the WJU cage, Elizabeth Hanks registered 17 saves against Shepherd's 35-shot attack.

Lillian Funke had top Rams honors with three goals and an assist.

WJU stays at home for 'Senior Day' on Sunday, April 22, against West Virginia Wesleyan starting at 3 p.m.
