Cardinals Take Advantage of Golden Eagle Miscues, Win Late Contest

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In rare Mountain East Conference night baseball, the Cardinals made the most of being under the lights. After Charleston took the opener by a 7-0 margin, Wheeling Jesuit pushed across six fourth-inning runs and held the home team without a hit in its final four at bats for the 6-4 win.

The Golden Eagles (14-12/8-4 MEC South) held the visitors to only three hits and built an early 5-0 lead before they added single scores in the latter frames in the first contest.

Charleston went out to a 4-0 advantage on six hits over the first two innings. In the top of the fourth, Jeff Patrick drew a bases loaded walk for the first Cardinals (4-16/3-9 MEC North) score, before a trio of Golden Eagles errors and a pair of wild pitches added five more scores. Between Frankie Favede and Nick Luciano, the two WJU hurlers held UC hitless in the final four frames.

Zach Blumling accounted for half of the Cardinals hits in the twinbill by going 2 for 3 in each game. Tristan Grimes lined a pair of hits and a run in the late game. Bobby Truelove and Matt Angelini both singled and scored a run.

Favede (1-1) picked up his first victory, covering the first five innings where he allowed six hits and struck out three. Luciano took over the final two innings for the save as he didn't give up a hit and struck out three, including two of the final three UC hitters to end the game.

WJU will return to home action on Wednesday afternoon, April 4, in a single 3:30 p.m. contest against Alderson Broaddus.
