Holmquist Last-second Score Lifts Cardinals Past Golden Eagles

CHARLESTON, W.Va. –  Haley Holmquist fired home the game-winning goal with two seconds left in the match to lift Wheeling Jesuit past the University of Charleston, 19-18, Sunday morning in a Mountain East Conference match at Schoenbaum Stadium.

Kori Hickman started the Cardinals (3-9, 1-1 MEC) early three-goal run with a successful finish after her teammate Taylor Quigg racked up the first draw control. The Golden Eagles (7-5, 1-1 MEC) recovered from the Cardinal´s initial surge and gained the lead, 5-4.

Holmquist started another seven-goal spurt by netting three goals. Hickman, Ally Coggins, Kelly Martyn and Paige Orbell each adding one point.

Charleston was set on taking the victory home, but one more goal of Holmquist disrupted that plan with two ticks left on the clock to take the match, 19-18.

The Cardinals offense was lead by Holmquist with an outstanding performance of six scores out of eight shots on goal and one assist. Hickman followed with four goals and added two assist. Kate Calder and Markie Wright both totaled two goals. Taylor Booth, Orbell, Coggins, Martyn and Gionna Alessandro netted one point each, with Coggins also adding a trio of assists.

Goalie Elizabeth Hanks saved 12 Golden Eagles´ shots on goal. WJU won 26 out of 38 draw controls, with Quigg and Lyndsay Carpenter each coming out on top eight times .

WJU returns to Bishop Schmitt Field next Friday when it hosts Shepherd University for a MEC conference match at 5 p.m.
