DiPerna Ninth-Frame Walk-off Single & Two Big Second Contest Innings Lead to Cardinals Sweep of Falcons

WHEELING, Va. – In less than 24 hours elapsed, the Cardinals won four games and allowed no earned runs over 29 innings. A Taylor DiPerna walk-off single and two big scoring innings propelled Wheeling Jesuit to a softball sweep of Fairmont State, 2-1 in nine innings and 8-0 in six frames, on Wednesday afternoon.

With two outs in the home ninth and two on, DiPerna lofted a single to shallow center field to plate Heather Pinney with the game-winning run in the day's opener. Erin Unterbrink continued her masterful work in the circle where she allowed only one runner to reach second base in her third shutout in a week, while the Cardinals (16-17/12-6 Mountain East Conference North) posted a big five-run third and added three more in the sixth for good measure to support the pitching performance over the Falcons (15-17/11-7 MEC North).

After the four victories in the past calendar day, WJU moves into sole possession of second place in the MEC North.

Leading the way for a second-straight day, Cassie Holstein lined four hits in eight at bats as part of the home team's 20 hits. She also scored twice, drove in a run and swiped a base.

Along with a two-run double and a bases-loaded walk in the late game, Mallory Chapman (11-10) registered a baker's dozen 13 strikeouts in the opener. Chapman allowed only four hits without an earned run or a walk in nine innings, in fact, she gave up only an eighth-frame lead off hit over the final five frames.

Victoria Scott lined three hits with a double and drove in a runner. Jackie Cramer added three hits, while Pinney, DiPerna and Alaina York each had a pair of hits.

Courtney Rogers doubled and drew two walks in game one and followed with the game-ending sac fly in game two. Bri Grimes completed the multi-hit Cardinals with two singles.

Unterbrink improved her season record to 5-7 with the third shutout in a week. She scattered six hits in six innings where she did not walk a batter for the second game in a row and struck out four.

In game one, Fairmont State took the lead on a fielder's choice in the fourth. Holstein led off the sixth with a single, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a ground out. She raced home to tie the game on a Falcons' wild pitch to make it 1-1.

At the home ninth, Pinney reached on a fielder's choice with two outs. Cramer singled through the left side, before DiPerna's game-winning single to shallow center, which fell in front of a charging Fairmont State center fielder.

In a scoreless second contest, Chapman smashed a hard liner up the middle for a double to plate both York and Grimes, who both singled. Scott added a run-scoring double and Pinney a two-run single for a 5-0 lead after three innings.

Holstein slashed a single through the left side for the first sixth-inning run before a bases-loaded Chapman walk and Rogers sac fly to end the game at 8-0 via the run rule.

WJU continues at home on Saturday afternoon, April 14, in a noon twinbill against defending MEC champion West Virginia Wesleyan.
