Cardinals Break Out Bats for Another Sweep, Move over .500 Mark

WHEELING, W.Va. – The busy but successful week continued for the Cardinals on the softball diamond. Wheeling Jesuit broke out the bats to a run of 17 runs and 26 hits in its third sweep of the week with 10-3 and 7-2 victories over Glenville State on Friday evening.

The Cardinals (18-17/14-6 Mountain East Conference North) broke open the first contest with a big five-run fourth. Tied at 2-2, Alaina York, who had five hits, lined an RBI single and she was followed by two-run doubles off Cassie Holstein and Mallory Chapman's bats. Courtney Rogers added a two-run double in the sixth as part of three more runs.

Tied at 2-2 again in game two going to the home fourth frame, York started the four-run outburst as WJU took advantage of three Glenville State (18-22/6-14 MEC South) errors to take a 6-2 lead.

With the third sweep of the week, the Cardinals moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season with a record of 18-17. The WJU squad also stayed in a first-place tie in the MEC North at 14-6 with Shepherd.

Of the 26 Cardinals hits, the trio of York, Brianna Grimes and Victoria Scott each slammed five hits apiece. York was 5 for 6 with the triple, four runs, three stolen bases and an RBI. Grimes was 5 of 7 with a triple, three runs and two RBI. Scott would not be outdone as she was 5 of 7 with a pair of doubles and a run.

Chapman contributed a 4 for 8 night where she doubled and drove in four runs. In the circle, the senior won her 12th where she struck out eight and gave up six hits and one earned run over seven innings.

Erin Unterbrink (6-7) recorded her fifth win in a row in game two. The third-year Cardinal allowed six hits and two earned runs to go with a walk and six strikeouts.

WJU wraps up its game-filled week with the toughest twinbill of the week in a Saturday afternoon, April 14, noon start against defending MEC champion West Virginia Wesleyan.
