Cardinals Quiet Hilltoppers Offense, Sweep Twinbill

WHEELING, Va. – For the first time in six doubleheaders, the Cardinals grabbed both ends. Wheeling Jesuit did not give up an earned run and scored opportunistic runs to sweep rival West Liberty on the softball diamond, 2-1 and 2-0.

After the Hilltoppers (11-15/5-11 Mountain East Conference North) tied the opener with an unearned run on a home error in the sixth, Bri Grimes beat the pitcher's throw home on the comebacker in the bottom of the seventh for the game-winning score.

A third-inning Victoria Scott bases-loaded RBI ground out and a Cassie Holestein run-scoring bunt single in the fourth was all WJU (14-17/10-6 MEC North) would need in the late contest. Erin Unterbrink fired her shutout in her last three starts as she scattered six West Liberty hits with only one coming in the final three visitors at bats.

Holstein was the Cardinals offensive spark. The senior lead-off hitter went 4 for 5 with two runs, three stolen bases, three walks and an RBI.

In game one, Mallory Chapman (10-10) fanned 12 Hilltoppers without a walk and allowed only three hits and no earned runs in her 10th win of the year. Unterbrink (4-7) won her third-straight start where she struck out five.

Chapman also had a single in each contest and drew five free passes and even swiped a base. Taylor DiPerna tripled and singled in game two, including a run, a walk and a stolen base. Jackie Cramer singled in both games, while Scott lined a two-run single in game one to go with her late RBI ground out.

For West Liberty, both Kelsi Johnson and Allie Cook singled twice each.

WJU continues its makeup dates with a MEC North home pair on Wednesday afternoon, April 11, against Fairmont State. First pitch will be 2 p.m.
