Chapman Leads to Opening Win, Rams Battle Back for Game 2 over Cardinals

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – For the third twinbill in a row, the Cardinals could not carry over the early success. Mallory Chapman fired a two-hitter and belted a 3-run homer to lead Wheeling Jesuit to a 5-0 opening win, before Shepherd battled back for a 5-1 late victory.

After the Rams (14-8/6-4 Mountain East Conference North) retired in the first frame, Cassie Holstein reached on an error and Brianna Grimes singled before Chapman connected on her 3-run homer over the right field wall. Holstein raced home on a wild pitch and Jackie Cramer lined a RBI single for the Cardinals (10-15/6-4 MEC North) single runs in the third and sixth.

Tied at 1-1 in the third inning, Shepherd pushed home two runs in the third and single scores in both the fourth and fifth at bats for the second game difference.

Chapman (9-8) fanned eight and did not allow her first hit in the opener until two outs in the fifth. Over 14 innings of work, the senior totaled 14 strikeouts along with her 3-run home run.

Cramer laced three of the 10 WJU hits with one RBI. Alaina York doubled in both contests. Holstein added a double, a stolen base and scored twice, while Victoria Scott added a double. Courtney Rogers and Grimes singled one time each.

WJU will tentatively make up a pair of games against Fairmont State on Monday, April 2, starting at 2 p.m. on the JB Chambers Complex.
