Yellow Jackets’ Fifth Innings Help Take Two from Cardinals

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Cardinals growth season continued Saturday with two good efforts. West Virginia State's fifth-inning scores helped take both ends of the baseball doubleheader from Wheeling Jesuit, 5-1 and 4-0.

In a scoreless game, the Yellow Jackets (14-11/5-7 Mountain East Conference South) received a lead-off home run and added an unearned second score. The home team put three more on the scoreboard in the sixth before the Cardinals (3-15/2-8 MEC North) plated one via an Adam Dennison double in the seventh, but it was not enough.

West Virginia State started its four-run fifth frame with two unearned on a lead-off double to make it a 4-0 game. WJU managed a single in the fourth, fifth and sixth at bats. Matt Brooks and Nick Luciano allowed only four hits on the Cardinals mound.

In the team's 10 hits, Dennison led with his RBI double and a single. Tristan Grimes, Logan Schickler and Bobby Truelove all lined two singles. Zach Blumling and Hayden Hizer each added one hit.

WJU will make up its Friday games on Monday, April 2, at the University of Charleston. First pitch set for 4 p.m.
