Cardinals Use Big Middle Quarters to Propel Past Scots

VIENNA, W.Va. – The Cardinals offensive engine took a quarter before it gained steam Tuesday. After trailing 4-3 after the first quarter, Wheeling Jesuit used a big 12-2 advantage in the middle frames to propel it past host Ohio Valley, 17-9, in Great Midwest Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action.

Trailing by one score, Dereck Downs, the reigning G-MAC Player of the Week, went to work with three of the second quarter's first four goals over a five-minute period for a 7-4 Cardinals (4-4/2-1 G-MAC) lead. WJU added the final three goals in the first half in the last 1:55 and made it six-straight with another trio of goals to open the initial 6:18 of the third period for a commanding 13-5 lead over Ohio Valley (2-5/1-2 G-MAC).

Downs blistered the twine for a game-high five goals for WJU. Fellow senior Matt Lee found the goal four times.

Jamison Smith recorded his best game of the year with four goals of his own along with an assist. Jordan Getz dished out three assists to go with his two scores.

Phil Burns and Michael Jablonski accounted for the other two Cardinals goals. Travis Getz chipped in two assists with one assist from each of Oscar Ortega, Austin Turley and Michael Schonhiutt.

Jake Lilly and Bear Scott split the WJU goal time with eight and one save to their credits. Scotty Gwynn scooped 12 ground balls and caused two turnovers. Brandon Foose and Ryan Gossett grabbed three ground balls each.

Ohio Valley had four players with two goals apiece.

Tied at 2-2, Lee netted a man up goal with 2:08 left in the first to put WJU back in front. OVU answered with the tying (1:19) and go ahead (0:18) for a 4-3 lead at the end of the first.

After a Scots goal in the late third quarter, Jamison scored back-to-back times with 2:03 and 1:13 on the clock to put the margin to 15-6 and put the match away.

WJU comes back to Wheeling for a Saturday afternoon home match, March 31, against Davis & Elkins. Face off will be 1 p.m.
