Cardinals Rally in First, Fall Short in Second to Golden Eagles

WHEELING, W.Va. – In a pair of close contests, the Cardinals went one for two in coming from behind. Wheeling Jesuit took advantage of a last at bat Charleston error for the 3-2 opening win, before the visitors made a four-run second inning hold up in the late contest, 4-2.

After a Brianna Grimes run-scoring tied the opener's fifth, Cassie Holestein forced an errant throw at the plate for the Cardinals (9-14/5-3 Mountain East Conference North) winning run in the seventh.

In the late game, the Golden Eagles (15-11/2-6 MEC South) started the second frame with four-straight singles for two runs and added another unearned pair as part of four total. WJU received Jackie Cramer and Molly Welsh RBI singles in the fourth and sixth, but they were not enough for a second comeback.

Victoria Scott had the hot Cardinal stick with five singles to go with a run and a stolen base. Welsh and Cramer added three hits with a RBI each. Grimes doubled and singled.

Mallory Chapman fanned six in the first game for her eighth pitching win of the year.

WJU continues with its make up games with a Wednesday, March 28, pair against Ohio Valley with a 3 p.m. first pitch.
