Cardinals Start Well but Storm Takes Match

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – A Cardinals strong opening 10 minutes proved to be not enough on Sunday. Wheeling Jesuit edged ahead by a goal eight minutes into the match, before Lake Erie College went on a 10-1 run and eventual 20-11 women's lacrosse win.

Kori Hickman opened the scoring and tied the match six minutes later, 2-2, at 22:53 of the first half. Bethany Wallingford struck 1:03 later for the second and would be final WJU (2-7) lead at 3-2. The Storm (4-2) netted 10 of the next 11 scores and never gave up the advantage.

Hickman paced the Cardinals attack with a five-goal day. Paige Orbell added two scores and an assist. Markie Wright contributed a goal and an assist.

Sarah Artzer, Wallingford and Hayley Holmquist had one goal apiece, while Kate Calder assisted on one WJU score.

Elizabeth Hanks recorded 11 first-half saves for the WJU defense and Chrissy Conklin had three in the second half.

Lake Erie received eight goals and two assists from the match's leading point producer, Anna Spin.

Down 12-4 at the half, Artzer and Orbell put the first two second-half goals on the scoreboard to make it a 12-6 deficit with 4:27 elapsed. The Storm stopped the visitors momentum with the next three goals.
