Chapman Pitches 1-Hitter, Yellow Jackets Back for Game 2

WHEELING, W.Va. – On more than a brisk Sunday afternoon, the Cardinals had enough for a softball split. Mallory Chapman pitched a one-hitter opener, 2-0, for Wheeling Jesuit, but West Virginia State bounced back for the late win, 6-0.

Chapman allowed only a one-out single in the top of the seventh, while Courtney Rogers doubled her home for WJU's second run in the only two first-game scores. The Yellow Jackets (16-10/4-4 Mountain East Conference South) pounded 11 hits and scored four seventh-inning insurance runs on the way to the 6-0 win over the Cardinals (8-13/4-2 MEC North).

Rogers was WJU's lone multi-hit players with a double and a single. Chapman doubled and score, while Brianna Grimes also doubled. Cassie Holstein, Molly Welsh and Victoria Scott had the other three home hits.

Chapman (7-6) fanned nine in the opener and added four more in game two where she took the loss.

In a scoreless contest with one out in the top of the sixth, Holstein singled and stole second. Following the second out, Chapman reached on an outfield error to score Holstein and scored herself on Rogers two-bagger.

WJU will make up Saturday's postponed games on Monday afternoon, March 26, against the University of Charleston starting at 1 p.m.
