Cardinals Quality Pitching and Timely Runs, Sweep Bobcats

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Cardinals came close last weekend and they broke through with two good games Saturday. Wheeling Jesuit used quality pitching and timely runs in two frames to post its first sweep of the season in 2-1 and 4-2 victories over West Virginia Wesleyan.

Hayden Hizer and Adam Dennison drove in home first runs and Josh Bell allowed only a fourth-inning solo home run over six innings, before Michael Finch saved the seventh to lead WJU (3-11/2-4 Mountain East Conference North Division) in game one.

In the late game, WJU pushed across four scores in the bottom of the second to open a 4-1 lead. After Logan Schickler allowed only a run in three-plus innings, Nick Luiciano recorded three perfect innings, before Finch closed out his second game, including two strikeouts to finish the night over the Bobcats (4-14/3-3 MEC South).

Tristan Grimes paced the WJU plate attack with a double, three singles, two runs and a RBI. Dennison doubled and singled twice with an RBI. Zach Blumling added a double and two other hits as well.

Schickler lined a run-scoring double and a single. Bobby Truelove lined a pair of singles.

Bell helped to snap the Cardinals 10-game losing streak with his solid pitching. The sophomore allowed only the solo homer over six frames, while he walked four and fanned six.

Finch picked up two saves in the contest with three strikeouts and did not allow a hit in two frames.

WJU continues at home with a Sunday, March 25, twinbill against Glenville State starting at 1 p.m.
