Cardinals Softball Take First Doubleheader of Season and Sweep Blue Knights

URBANA, Ohio – After a tough schedule early season, the Cardinals are trying to put things together in Mountain East Conference play. Wheeling Jesuit plated three in the fifth inning of game 1, before Mallory Chapman pitched her second shutout in two days and Courtney Rogers blasted a two-run homer to take both ends of Monday's doubleheader, 5-2 and 9-0 in five innings, at Urbana.

Trailing 2-0 in the fourth of the opener, Molly Welsh doubled home Rogers for the first Cardinals (7-12/3-1 MEC North). Brianna Grimes singled home a pair and Rogers added a run-scoring single to break open the game and give Chapman all she would need for the win.

In a scoreless game, Victoria Scott doubled home a run and Grimes lined a two-run single to give the Cardinals a 5-0 advantage. Chapman rounded the fifth-inning bases when Rogers blasted a two-run shot to left center, before Alaina York sliced a two-run single up the middle to put the game out of reach, 9-0 in five innings to complete the run-rule shortened contest.

Chapman was stellar in the circle. The senior went all 12 frames where she allowed only two earned runs and five hits with three walks to 15 strikeouts. The game two one-hitter was her second shutout in two days after she three-hit Notre Dame in Sunday's opener.

With her two hits, Grimes made the most of it with four RBI. Rogers, though, accounted for a quarter of the Cardinals' 20 hits with three in the opener and two more in the second, including her two-run homer.

Scott added a double and two singles, while Cassie Holstein singled three times and stole a base. Heather
Pinney and Chapman both doubled and singled, while Welsh doubled.

WJU has a few days off before hosting the University of Charleston on Saturday afternoon, March 24, in a 2 p.m.
twinbill.
