No. 20 Lakers Shoots Past WJU

WHEELING, W.Va. – Wheeling Jesuit dropped a Sunday afternoon women's lacrosse match to No. 20 Grand Valley State, 22-11.

After a rough start of 0-4, Paige Orbell scored the Cardinals (2-6) first goal, but the Lakers responded with full force. Scoring four goals in the last five minutes of the first half, WJU fought back to end the first half in 7-10. Paige Orbell kicked off the second half scoring for the Cardinals, with a goal three minutes into the action, helping the cardinals get back on the board, 8-12. The Lakers (2-2) went for a five goal spurt at minute 16, growing their lead to 19-10. Kate Calder answered with a score off teammate Kori Hickman, but the Lakers took control of the game to finish with 22-11.

Paige Orbell lead the WJU offense with four goals out of seven shots on goal. Orbell also won four draw controls, forced two turnovers, and picked up two ground balls. Hayley Holmquist scored three goals, while Kori Hickman, Markie Wright, Kate Calder and Bethany Wallingford each finished with one goal. 

Freshman goalkeeper Elizabeth Hanks stopped 13 saves in the net. Taylor Quigg grabbed three ground balls and caused two turnovers of her own. Lyndsay Carpenter also added two caused turnovers and picked up two ground balls.

The Cardinals continue at home with a Wednesday afternoon, Mar. 21, home match versus the Lady Knights of Gannon University. The match is scheduled for a game 4 p.m. start.
