Cardinals Use Strong Start, Overtake Battlers

WHEELING, W.Va. – After a rigorous last five road contests, the Cardinals found a cold Wednesday home afternoon to their liking. Hayley Holmquist fired home a career-best six goals with five in the first half to power Wheeling Jesuit's strong strong to overtake Alderson Broaddus, 20-5, in women's lacrosse.
 
Holmquist and Kate Calder helped the Cardinals (2-5) rattled off the game's first seven goals over the opening 13:10. In fact, Holmquist shot five goals in the first half to pace WJU to a 13-3 intermission lead. The Battlers (1-5) added two second-half goals, but could not get back in the game.

Holmquist finished with a career-high seven points with an assist to go with her six goals. Paige Orbell and Ally Coggins had four goals apiece for the home offense.
 
Kori Hickman was an assist machine with eight helpers to go with a pair of goals. Calder contributed two scores and two assists. Markie Wright had the other assist. Elizabeth Hanks saved five AB shot attempts.
 
The Battlers saw five different players account for their five goals.
 
WJU stays at home this weekend against Grand Valley State in a noon Sunday, March. 18, match.
