No. 6 Griffins Third-Period Success Downs Cardinals

GREENSBURG, Pa. – After a close opening half, the Cardinals could not keep the momentum out of the half. No. 6 ranked Seton Hill fired home five third-period goals and built enough of a lead to hold down Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse, 10-6, in both teams Great Midwest Athletic Conference openers.
 
Dereck Downs pulled WJU (2-4/0-1 G-MAC) with two, 4-2, with the final first-half goal at 11:53 in the second frame. The Griffins (5-1/1-0 G-MAC) sandwiched a Downs goals with two scores to start the third period and added three more after it to open a 9-3 lead. The Cardinals doubled their ouput in the final 15 minutes, but it was not enough.
 
Downs paced WJU with his two goals. Matt Lee, Jamison Smith, Jordan Getz and Phil Burns found the net one time each. Travis Getz assisted on one WJU score.
 
In net, Cardinals goalie Jake Lilly was tough as he stopped 20 Seton Hill shots of the 30 on goal he faced.
 
Zack Rauch led all scorers for the Griffins with four goals.
 
WJU will now have over a week off before it hosts Walsh on Saturday, March 24, in a 1 p.m. match.
