Cardinals Take Control Early, Coast Past Golden Eagles

WHEELING, W.Va. – The first Cardinals sweep of the season. Chenelle Moore exerted herself early and helped Wheeling Jesuit take control early and coast home with the 64-49 women's basketball victory over the University of Charleston.

Moore scored the game's opening bucket, added nine more in the first quarter and posted 15 points for the first half as the Cardinals (11-12/9-8 Mountain East Conference) built a 19-10 and 31-16 opening half advantage. The WJU lead grew to as many as 27 points, 49-22, in the late third frame, before Charleston (9-13/6-11 MEC) made a late push for naught.

"Our defense was stellar for 40 minutes. We followed our scout perfectly throughout the game. Our players played very unselfish and shared the ball," said WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "Chenelle (Moore) and Cassi (Stein) were exceptional today. Mo Burns was efficient in all phases offensively."

WJU held Charleston to 19 of 53 in the game. But when the game was still not decided, the Cardinals defense locked down the Goldens Eagles to a 10 for 35 tune (.286).

After 15 points and six rebounds in the first half, Moore finished with 20 points on 8 of 12 from the floor with nine rebounds and three steals. Stein was solid with a 6 of 12 night for 13 points and six caroms.

Burns added 13 points, including three treys, to go with five boards and three assists. Mariah Callen handed out six assists and chipped in seven tallies. Lauren Lipscomb and Taliah Caldwell had five points apiece.

Dionna Sanders came on in the fourth quarter and finished with 17 points for Charleston.

WJU travels down the road to battle West Virginia State on Saturday afternoon in a 2 p.m. contest.
