Yellow Jackets Big Second-Quarter Run Too Much for Cardinals

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – With a new found lead, the Cardinals seemed to have the game starting in their direction, but turned out out to be short lived. West Virginia State ran off 16-straight second-quarter points and controlled the game for the last 25 minutes of an 83-73 win over Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball.

A Monica Burns trey with exactly 6:00 minutes left in the game to pull the Cardinals (11-13/9-9 Mountain East Conference) back to within eight points, 79-71. The Yellow Jackets (10-14/10-8 MEC), though, allowed the visitors no closer down the stretch.

Mariah Callen and Chenelle Moore paced the WJU offense with 16 points apiece. Callen added five assists and Moore pulled down 12 rebounds for a double-double.

Burns added 11 points and five rebounds, while both Cassi Stein and Lauren Lipscomb had eight points and four boards each.

Aurressshae Hines paced West Virginia State with 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Trailing 14-8 early on, the Cardinals scored eight points in a row from four each by Burns and Moore to edge ahead, 16-14. The opening frame ended as Stein dropped a jump shot for a 21 tie.

A Callen tripled with 7:19 left in the second gave WJU a 29-26 lead. The Yellow Jackets buzzed over the next five minutes for a 16-0 run to make it 42-29 and eventual 46-38 intermission advantage.

Taliah Cashwell hit a jumper in the opening second of the third quarter and Moore added a layup less than a minute later to cut the WJU deficit down to six points each time, 46-40 and 48-42. West Virginia State answered with a nine-point spurt for a 15-point difference, 57-42, in only 2:40 off the clock. The home team led 74-58 after third stanzas.

WJU continues on the road against MEC-leader Glenville State next Thursday night, Feb. 15, at 5:30 p.m.
