Webb Putback Gives Cavaliers Last-Second Win over Cardinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – After a missed layup, The Virginia's College at Wise's Cynita Webb offensive putback beat the buzzer and gave her team over Wheeling Jesuit, 66-64, in women's basketball Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 64-61, the Cardinals (10-12/8-8 Mountain East Conference) Monica Burns downed a top-of-the key 3-pointer to tied the game at 64 with 13 seconds left. The Cavaliers (4-17/3-13 MEC) saw Quick Gomez drive the right side of the lane, but missed the shot only to have Webb beat the clock.

"We missed eight free throws and were outrebounded in the second half. They did not have an answer for Chenelle (Moore), but we did not get her get enough touches in the second half," said WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "UVa.-Wise played a good game, but we have to learn (from today) and focus on next game.

Burns topped all scorers with 24 points on 8 of 15 shooting, including 5 of 7 treys, and four assists. After a 15-point and 9-rebound first half, Moore finished the day with 16 points on 7 of 11 from the floor, 12 boards and four assists.

Mariah Callen, who had six assists, and Cassi Stein both chipped in seven points.

Webb powered the Cavaliers with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Behind a 20-13 second quarter, WJU held a 37-31 advantage heading into the intermission after Moore and Burns netted back-to-back buckets.

The Cardinals lead grew to eight points, 45-37, at 5:06 in the third quarter on a Kiara Wade inside layin. UVa-Wise rallied for the next 10 points capped by a Webb layup for a 47-45 lead. A pair of Lauren Lipscomb foul shots pushed the home team back on top, 49-48, heading into the final stanza.

The Cavaliers scored the final quarter's first six points and they built a five-point lead, 58-53, at 4:28. A Callen inside layup from Burns and 3-point play conversion put WJU back on top, 61-60, two minutes later. UVa-Wise went back on top in its next possession and added a free throw for a 64-61 lead with 18 seconds left.

WJU completes it 3-game homestand when it host Charleston next Thursday, Feb. 8, at 5:30 p.m.
