Cardinals Men’s Lacrosse Prevails over Saints

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – After a tough Tuesday end of the match, the Cardinals reversed it in their Wednesday favor. Trailing 4-3 at half, Wheeling Jesuit men's lacrosse claimed the second half by three goals, including a pair of Dereck Downs scores midway through the fourth quarter for the 8-6 win at Maryville (Mo.).

The Cardinals (2-2) had their way in the third quarter as Jordan Getz started the scoring at 11:23, before Downs (7:53) and then Phil Burns found the net for the second time at 35 seconds for the 6-3 advantage. The Saints (2-4) pulled to within one score, 6-5, but Downs registered back-to-back scores with 8:06 and 6:19 to put the game away.

Downs finished with his third 'hat trick' in four matches with his three goals. Burns and Getz added two goals apiece.

Michael Jablonski had the other tally. Jamison Smith and Michael Schonhiutt assisted on one score each. Goalie Jake Lilly saved four shots.

Maryville saw both Maxwell Johnson and Parker Lee score two times for the home team.

Maryvill held a big 23-8 first-half advantage in shots, but WJU came back with a 19-12 lead on them in the second stanza.

Burns and Jablonski helped WJU start strong with the match's first two goals in the opening 5:28.

WJU returns home on Saturday afternoon, March 3, in a 1 p.m. match against Indianapolis.
