Fla. Southern Holds WJU Softball in Check

LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Southern held Wheeling Jesuit softball in check Tuesday night in the pair of 1-0 and 6-1 final scores.

The Moccasins' (10-4) starter Kelli Gault allowed a leadoff walk to Cassie Holstein to begin the opener, retired the next 19 Cardinals (3-7), before she walked Molly Welsh in the top of the seventh and then complete the no-hitter with the final two outs.

In the late contest, WJU saw a 1-0 deficit blow open as Florida Southern plated five runs on six hits in the home fifth to make it a 6-0 margin. The Cardinals lined three hits by Victoria Scott, Mercedes McNett and Carolyn Blattler, before McNett touched home via a throwing error for what would be the 6-1 final.

Mallory Chapman had the tough luck loss in the first contest. Chapman went six innings where gave up only six hits, one earned run in the second and fanned four.

Holstein, Heather Pinney and Jackie Cramer accounted for the three other WJU hits in game two.

WJU completes its Florida games on Wednesday, Feb. 28, in a twinbill at the University of Tampa starting at 6 p.m.
