Tampa Blanks WJU Softball

TAMPA, Fla. – The Cardinals came up empty on their opportunities. The University of Tampa blanked Wheeling Jesuit softball on both ends of Wednesday's twinbill, 5-0 and 8-0 in 5 innings.

WJU (3-9) had Cassie Holstein on second base in both the first and third innings, but it could not get her home, while Tampa (8-8) pushed two runners across in the second and three in the third for the win.

The Cardinals went without a timely hit in the second contest as well. With Holstein on third and Molly Welsh on first with one out, WJU did not score in the top of the first. As Mikaela Miller and Jackie Cramer singled and were sacrificed to second and third, Holstein doubled down the left field line, but Miller was thrown out at home. Tampa rode the momentum to an eight-run home fifth inning, four unearned to end the game by the eight-run rule.

Holstein paced the Cardinals again at the plate with two doubles, a single and a stolen base for three of the six team's hits. Miller, Cramer and Victoria Scott had one hit each.

WJU returns north and travels to Salem, Virginia for a four-game weekend on Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11.
