Cardinals Split With Chargers, Chapman Fans 500th

ORLANDO, Fla. – In the final day at the ESPN World of Sports facility, the Cardinals had their best offensive day at the plate. Wheeling Jesuit broke open the softball opener with a four-run seventh for a 7-1 victory, before Dominican College came back to take game two, 6-3.

Leading 3-0 after single runs in the first, second and fifth, the Cardinals (3-5) put the game away when Courtney Rogers belted a 3-run homer on the way to a 7-1 final. With her six strikeouts, Mallory Chapman surpassed the 500 career strikeout mark.

Tied at 1-1 after an inning, the Chargers (1-4) scored three times in the top of the second and did not trail again to earn the split.

At the plate, Chapman doubled three times in six at bats. Cassie Holstein and Molly Welsh accounted for four of the team's other 15 hits. Holstein doubled, hit three singles, scored three times and swiped two bases. Welsh tripled, singled twice and drove in a pair.

Along with her three-run homer, Rogers added RBI single in the second game.

WJU will have Monday off until it plays a twinbill at Florida Southern Tuesday evening, Feb. 27, starting at 6 p.m.
