Rockhurst Four-Goal First Quarter Holds Up over WJU Men’s Lacrosse

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In the first of the three Midwest Spring Break road trip, the Cardinals fell short of regaining the lead. Wheeling Jesuit scored the first goal, but host Rockhurst posted the next four goals in the opening quarter and held onto the lead for the 14-8 win the rest of the way in Sunday's men's lacrosse match.

Phil Burns netted the match's first score for the Cardinals (1-1) 2:28 in. The Hawks (4-0), though, found the net four times over the following 7:24 of the first period for a 4-1 lead. WJU made a run in both the second and third frames to pull back with two goals, 5-3 and 7-5, but it was unable to get any closer.

Dereck Downs paced the Cards attack for the second time in as many games with four goals and assist.

The Getz brothers, Jordan and Travis, both scored a goal and assisted on another. Jamison Smith and Burns had the other scores. Scotty Gwyn assisted on one WJU goal.

In net, Jake Lilly recorded 12 saves for the WJU defense. Rockhurst did pelt him with 47 shots to WJU's 23, including 28-10 in the first half. The home team also had a 26-17 shots on goal advantage and won 20 of 26 face offs.

Downs and Smith helped WJU pull back to a two-goal deficit, 5-3, at 3:57 left in the first half. Rockhurst had the final two opening half's scores for a 7-3 intermission tally.

Jordan Getz and Downs had the second half's opening two goals and again cut it to 7-5. Rockhurst rallied for five-straight scores to stop the visitors' momentum.

WJU moves on to face national-ranked Lindenwood on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 27, starting at 6 p.m.
