Cardinals Drop Tough Pair in Citrus Classic Opening Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ORLANDO, Fla. – A tough opening pair of games met the Cardinals in Florida. Columbus State starter Darby Demarest one-hit Wheeling Jesuit, 1-0, in the morning game, before No. 2 North Georgia took advantage of being able to score six unearned runs in a 7-2 afternoon contest on Friday.

A bottom of the first inning Courtney Rogers single was all the offense the Cardinals (1-3) were able to muster against DeMarest while the Cougars plated the game's only run in the visiting sixth frame. The nationally-ranked Nighthawks went out to a 6-0 lead in the first three innings and the Cardinals pushed across lone scores by Heather Pinney in the fourth and sixth at bats.

"These losses don't sum up the positives that came out of today," stressed Sara Pelegreen, WJU head coach. "Although the scores didn't go our way, our team is growing and gaining a lot of confidence in their play. We are four games in and performing very well, and Icouldn't be happier with where we are right now."

In WJU's eight hits combined in the two contests, Rogers doubled and singled, while both Pinney, Mallory Chapman and Brianna Grimes lined a pair of hits.

Over the 13 innings in the circle, Erin Unterbrink in the first game and Chapman in the late contest allowed only two earned runs with seven strikeouts and four walks. Unterbrink gave up five hits, one earned run and fanned four. Chapman gave up just one earned run as well with the other six North Georgia scores being unearned due to WJU errors.

Against North Georgia in both the fourth and sixth innings with one out, Pinney, Chapman and Grimes had back-to-back-to-back singles to score the two WJU runs.

WJU returns to the diamond Saturday against the same two teams in same order with Columbus State at 10 a.m. and North Georgia at 3 p.m.
