Blue Knights Have Last Run, Stop Cardinals Comeback

URBANA, Ohio – The comeback Cardinals could not last the final stanza. After trailing by double digits, Wheeling Jesuit stormed back into the lead only to see Urbana have the final fourth-quarter run for the 78-70 women's basketball victory.

Down 45-34 early in the third quarter, WJU pulled within a point in the final minute of the third. The Cardinals (12-15/10-11 Mountain East Conference) rally continued and they took the lead, 56-55, on a Mariah Callen layup with 9:10 left. In fact, the visitors led by three points twice, 62-59 and 64-61, at 6:29 left. The Blue Knights (12-13/10-11 MEC) regained the momentum with a game-deciding 11-0 spurt from that point and went on for the win.

Monica Burns drained 9 of 17 shots, including 5 of 11 treys, for a game-high 28 points in the loss. Callen added 6 o 11 attempts for 19 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists.

Kiara Wade chipped in six points and eight rebounds, while Cassi Stein had six points, five rebounds and four assists. Lauren Lipscomb contributed seven points and four rebounds.

Urbana was led by two top individual efforts in Dannie Shafer's 17 points and Stefanie Davis' 11 points and 15 assists.

The Blue Knights outrebounded the Cardinals, 38-33, and connected on 9 of 13 fourth-quarter shot attempts.

After four first-quarter ties, WJU opened the second quarter with the first seven points to open its largest lead of the night, 28-21, after a Taliah Cashwell layup and five Burns tallies. Urbana turned around as it did later in the contest with the next 12 points and a 20-2 run in total over a six-minute period to open a 41-30 advantage.

WJU completes its regular season when it travels up the hill on Saturday, Feb. 24, in a 2 p.m. contest at West Liberty.
