Hilltoppers Have Enough to Hold off Cardinals

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The second-half Cardinals momentum could not last through the fourth quarter. West Liberty had enough to hold off Wheeling Jesuit from coming back in the fourth and took an 83-75 season finale women's basketball victory.

Tied at 40 at half, Cassi Stein scored the opening four points of the second half for the Cardinals (12-16/10-12 Mountain East Conference), but the Hilltoppers (13-15/12-10 MEC) netted the final five tallies of the third quarter to make it 64-59 home club. WJU was able to get back to five points two times, including 78-73 with 2:05 left on two Tori Harrison free throws, but could get no closer.

Senior Mariah Callen pumped in her second-best point total of her career with 28 points to go with three rebounds and two steals. Stein set her new career-best with 23 points on 9 of 13 from the floor along with six boards, two assists and two steals.

Monica Burns chipped in 15 points and four assists.

WJU moves on to the MEC Tournament in Charleston next Thursday, March 1, when it takes on West Virginia State at 2:15 p.m.

West Liberty received big days from both Brandi Beader and Marissa Brown with 28 and 26 points.

The Cardinals opened the game with opening six points from Burns and Stein. The Hilltoppers came back on a 19-3 run and held a 21-11 tally after the first frame.

WJU bounced back with an 11-3 spurt in the second, including nine points of it from Burns, to edge ahead 30-29. The two teams then went to the locker room tied at 40.
