Rogers Powers Cardinals to Victory, Split with Griffins

GREENSBURG, Pa. – After a tough late-game opening 1-0 loss, the Cardinals or more specific Courtney Rogers broke out the stick in the late game. Rogers powered Wheeling Jesuit to a split at Seton Hill in a 5-1 game two final as she belted a two-run homer and drove in four runs on three hits Tuesday afternoon in the season opener.

A tough-luck ball in left center hit off a Cardinals (1-1) outfielder's glove with one out in the home sixth as the Griffins (1-1) plated the opener's lone run. Following a run-scoring first-frame single, Rogers belted her two-run homer in the third and added a third time she drove home Cassie Holstein as part of the five-run WJU attack. Game two Cardinals pitcher Erin Unterbrink fanned seven, but more importantly she did not allow a runner past second base over the first six innings.

"Today was a good day overall. Two wins in my book as we played close to perfect defense, our pitchers were stellar and our hitting was a lot better than we anticipated it to be day one," said WJU head coach Sara Pelegreen. "From top-to-bottom, I am so proud of these girls and their effort they give day in-and-day out. If today is any indication of how the season will go, I'm definitely okay with that."

Cassie Holstein
Along with Rogers day, Holstein registered a double, a single, three runs, three walks and three stolen bases as the offensive catalyst. Mallory Chapman lined a game-one double and a pair of hits with another double and one RBI in the late contest.

Molly Welsh doubled and Heather Pinney, Brianna Grimes and Victoria Scott singled each for the other Cardinals hits.

Unterbrink picked up the circle win with seven strikeouts and one earned run as she scattered eight hits. Chapman had a very strong first game with one earned runs, four hits and three strikeouts in six frames.

WJU heads south for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24, split doubleheaders against Columbus State (Ga.) and No. 7 North Georgia at Walt Disney World's Citrus Classic. Games are set for 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Friday.

Game 1
The Cardinals had their chances. Holstein doubled to lead off the season to left field, but she was stranded as the next three hitters were retired. Scott and Jackie Cramer walked in the third, but were left on base.

In the home sixth with one out, Christina Skrabak tripled to left center as her liner hit off a WJU outfield glove. The Griffin came around to score three batters later to make it 1-0.

In the top of the seventh, Pinney singled and Chapman doubled to place Cardinals at second and third with no outs. After a strikeout, Scott lined to the home shortstop who turned it into a game-ending double play.

Game 2
In each of the first, third and fifth innings, Holstein led off by reaching base. She singled the first time and walked the next two, before she swiped second each occasion. Rogers drove her in each time via a single, home run and a single.

Welsh started the seven with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on a Chapman single through the right side to make it 5-0.

Seton Hill managed a run on two hits in the seventh, but it was all Unterbrink would allow.
