Goddard Leads Cardinals Senior Trio in Sound Win over Bobcats

WHEELING, W.Va. – Sometimes the forgotten one of the three Cardinals was the leader in his final home contest. Drake Goddard pumped in a career-high 18 points and led the Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball three seniors and team to a sound win over West Virginia Wesleyan, 85-66, on Saturday afternoon.

Goddard helped the Cardinals (21-5/16-4 Mountain East Conference) work out to a last part of the first half comfortable lead. WJU turned a 3-point edge into a doubling of the West Virginia Wesleyan (7-19/7-13 MEC) score behind an 18-2 run.

"It was a good team win today. Our defense in the first half as we really guarded hard, created turnovers and took control," pointed out Danny Sancomb, WJU head coach. "We moved the ball offensively and did a great job against their zone."

The Cardinals coach continued, "Jeremiah Wilson played well in the second half, while Haywood Highsmith had another double-double, but with assists today. Drake shot the ball very well for us and Pat Moseh was Pat Moseh with a solid game. Brent Pegram also took care of the ball and made all eight of his free throws. We need to be ready for next week, though."

Goddard, Highsmith and Moseh were honored before the game as the WJU Senior Three, who has led the program to four 20-plus win seasons, a MEC Regular Season title, and last year's Atlantic Regional final. The three also record over 3,800 combined points.

Goddard, though, shined as he hit 6 of 7 from the field and 5 of 6 treys for his career-best 18 points.

Highsmith dished out a career-best 10 assists to go with 13 points and eight rebounds. Moseh registered 13 points on 5 of 6 from the floor, four rebounds and five assists.

Wilson netted 7 of 9 of his own shots for 16 points and six caroms. Fresh off his Thursday night game-winning 3-pointer, Preston Boswell contributed 15 points and assisted on six buckets.

As a team, WJU made 29 of 44 shots at a 65.9% clip.

The Bobcats received 14 points from Luke Layhew in the contest.

After the game-changing first-half run, the Cardinals did not allow the Bobcats closer than 17 points coming in the final three minutes.

WJU will start its final regular season week with a 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night, Feb. 21, game at Urbana.
