Cardinals Big Early Run, Ease Past Blue Knights

URBANA, Ohio – In an important game, the Cardinals came to play. Five minutes into the contest, Wheeling Jesuit put in 20-straight points and never let Urbana back into the contest as it eased home in a 90-65 Mountain East Conference men's basketball final.

Trailing 11-10 less than five minutes in, the Cardinals (22-5/17-4 MEC) had a Jeremiah Wilson offensive putback and Haywood Highsmith back-to-back buckets and assisted on a third when Drake Goddard drained a triple to soar to the lead. The Goddard trey was the first of three in a row to propel the 20-0 and 26-3 run overall. Urbana (4-22/3-18 MEC) could make a run until it trailed 84-44 with 4:25, but the home team finished strong.

"It was a good team win as we played good defense and rebounded the ball. We did a great job moving the ball," pointed out WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "Pat (Moseh), Haywood, Preston (Boswell) and Jeremiah did a good job scoring the ball. Drake and Brent (Pegram) did a nice job running the show."

Highsmith produced two even halves with 10 points and five boards in the first half and another 10 points and seven caroms in the second half. On the night, the senior was 7 of 9 from the floor, including downing both triples, for 20 points and 12 rebounds, while he handed out five assists.

Moseh had a similar night as he went from nine points and three rebounds to a 21-point and eight-rebound totals. Boswell helped WJU get out to its big lead with a 12-point first 20 minutes, before he finished with 18 points to go with four assists.

Wilson added 13 points on 6 of 10 tries and nine rebounds. Goddard chipped in seven points, all in the first half, and five assists. Pegram had five points and Zach Collins four off the bench.

WJU controlled the glass by a 45-27 margin.

Urbana saw senior Carlas Jackson downed five treys as part of his game-best 27 points.

WJU finishes its regular season against No. 5 and rival West Liberty on Saturday, Feb. 24. Game is set for a 4 p.m. tip.
