No. 9 Regis Scores Eight Straight to Pull Away from Cardinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – On a brisk Friday afternoon, the Cardinals battled one of NCAA Division II's best in the season opener. A pair of Wheeling Jesuit goals made it a tight contest halfway through the first half, before No. 9 Regis University netted the final four and added the second stanza's opening four scores to pull away for the 20-8 women's lacrosse win.

Falling behind 4-1, Hayley Holmquist and Kate Calder found the back of the Rangers (0-1) net less than three minutes apart to make it 4-3 with 14:39 left in opening 30 minutes. Ali Vanek and Sarah Myres took turns with a pair of goals the rest of the first half and the Cardinals (0-1) never was closer than the halftime five-goal margin, 8-3.

Calder and freshman Paige Orbell fired home two goals apiece to lead the WJU effort. Kori Hickman added three assists.

Holmquist, Taylor Booth, Markie Wright and Bethany Wallingford had one score each. Gionna Alessandro assisted on one Cardinal tally.

Elizabeth Hanks stopped seven Regis shots in the WJU goal.

The duo of Vanek and Myres both produced five goals in the Regis winning effort. The Rangers outshot the home team 34-15.

WJU returns to action next Tuesday, Feb. 22, in a 4 p.m. road contest at Edinboro.
