Boswell Drains Game-Winning Trey at Buzzer, Cardinals Record Win No. 20

WHEELING, W.Va. – After Pat Moseh corralled the loose ball at the top of the key and passed to the right wing where Preston Boswell drained the game-winning 3-pointer and beat the buzzer to propel Wheeling Jesuit to a 68-65 men's basketball road victory at Glenville State.

Trailing 65-60 with 1:40 left in the game, Jeremiah Wilson hit a free throw 15 seconds later. Boswell was fouled on the next Cardinals possession where he made the first and missed the second, but Haywood Highsmith skied for the rebound and putback. Highsmith converted the 3-point play for a 65-65 tie. Glenville State (6-19/4-15 Mountain East Conference) missed a trey and Wilson pulled down the defensive rebound to set up the final 19-second WJU (20-5/15-4 MEC) game-deciding possession.

"A big shot from Preston," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "Glenville played hard and beat us to all the loose balls. We need to be ready to play, and we have to move the ball more on offense. We did a poor job rebounding, and need to play better Saturday."

With the victory, Sancomb's Cardinals post their 20th win for the fourth year in a row and keep their drive for a third NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional spot on course.

Along with the game-winner, which was his only 3-pointer he attempted in the game, Boswell led all scorers with 23 points on 8 of 10 shooting and 6 of 8 free throws.

With the key 3-point play with 51 seconds left, Highsmith posted his 22nd double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to go with three blocks and four steals. Moseh added 13 tallies, five rebounds and four assists.

Wilson rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points. Drake Goddard chipped in six points, four boards and two assists.

Darihus Nunn almost single-handedly helped the Pioneers pull off the upset with his 21-point effort.

WJU was uncharacteristically outrebounded by Glenville State, 37-29, but it did hold the home team to 26 of 63 from the field (41.3%).

The Cardinals did start the game leading 9-3 and led by as many as seven points, 27-20, after a Wilson layup at 9:23 in first half. The Pioneers rallied to take a one-point, 36-35, edge to halftime.

WJU led by no more than four points, 48-44, midway through the second half after a Wilson foul shot. The teams traded small leads until Glenville State spurt ahead 65-60 with six of seven points at 1:40 left in the contest.

The Cardinals head home for their final home contest of the season on Saturday, Feb. 17. WJU entertains West Virginia Wesleyan in a 4 p.m. Senior Day contest.
