Cardinals Lead Entire Way, Held Yellow Jackets At Bay

WHEELING, W.Va. – From Drake Goddard's opening 3-pointer until the final horn, the Cardinals controlled the Saturday afternoon action. Wheeling Jesuit made it a two-win week as it held West Virginia State at bay after taking the early lead and control for the 81-73 victory.

The Cardinals (19-5/14-4 Mountain East Conference) made it 5-0 early lead on a Haywood Highsmith dunk after the Goddard triple and he continued with four more points to make it 11-2. WJU doubled up West Virginia State (12-11/10-8 MEC) at 24-12 on a Brent Pegram trey just over 10 minutes into the game. The visiting Cardinals never let the Yellow Jackets closer than seven points coming with 58 seconds left.

"It was a nice team win. We played good team defense and made enough plays on offense to get the road win," noted WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "Pat (Moseh), Haywood, Preston (Boswell), and Jeremiah (Wilson) did a nice job scoring the ball. Brent (Pegram) played well off the bench and Chris (Greene) and Brendan Hoban gave us good minutes."

WJU had a balanced scoring final line with four players between 14 to 16 points apiece. Highsmith hit 5 of 10 attempts for 16 points and added 14 rebounds for his 21st double-double, while Moseh also had 16 points to go with seven boards and four assists.

Boswell chipped in 15 points, three caroms and three helpers. Wilson added his own double-double of 14 points on 4 of 6 from the floor and 12 rebounds. Pegram downed a trio of 3-pointers as part of his 11-point day.

Off the home bench, Jeremiah Moore led all scorers with 24 points and had seven rebounds for West Virginia State.

WJU held the advantage on the glass, 49-41, but it did commit an uncharacteristic 15 turnovers.

The Cardinals travel next Thursday, Feb. 15, trek to face the Pioneers of Glenville State in a 7:30 p.m. tip.
