Cardinals Take Final Quarter, Push Past Mt. Lions

WHEELING, W.Va. – In another tight contest between the two teams, the Cardinals had the final push this time. Wheeling Jesuit ran off a game-deciding 11-0 run two minutes into the final quarter and pushed past Concord, 77-68, in Mountain East Conference women's basketball.

Trailing 57-54 with 8:15 on the clock, WJU (10-11/8-7 MEC) saw Monica Burns, who led all scorers with 27 points, down a trey to start the 11-0 run and finished it with a pair of free throws. Concord (11-9/7-8 MEC) climbed back to within two, 65-63, moments later, before Burns hit her fifth 3-pointer and Mariah Callen added one of her own and sealed the victory.

"We challenged the team at halftime to rebound and play with energy. Concord is a hot team and we needed to lock in (on defense) in the second half," pointed out WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "I spoke with Mo and Mariah also at the half to step up and they sure did. Kiara Wade also stepped up when Chenelle (Moore) got in foul trouble tonight. Overall, it was a big win for us as our conference is so competitive from top to bottom."

Burns down 8 of her 17 shots in the game, including 5 of 9 from long-range, for her 27-point effort. She added five rebounds and a pair of assists. Callen joined her in the 20-point club with 22 on 7 of 12 from the floor to go with five assists. The two WJU guards were 13 of 14 combined from the foul line.

Wade came off the bench for eight points and five boards. She helped the Cardinals outrebound the taller Mt. Lions team, 39-33.

Moore chipped in eight points with six of those in the final seven minutes and had five rebounds in 18 minutes of limited action. Cassi Stein pulled down eight caroms and scored four points, while she dished out four assists, blocked a shot and swiped two balls. Lauren Lipscomb had six points, and six rebounds.

Madison May was Concord's driving force with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Riley Fitzwater had the game's only double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Concord enjoyed a five-point, 22-17, lead after 10 minutes of action. Behind Callen's seven-straight points, WJU pulled to within a point, 36-35, at half.

The two teams, who played to a one-point (71-70) final won by Concord back on Jan. 11, were tied at 50-50 at the end of the third stanza.

The Cardinals remain at home as they host the Cavaliers of UVa.-Wise on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 3, in a 2 p.m. matchup.
