Cardinals Pounce On Mt. Lions, Ease Home to Victory

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Cardinals wasted no time in exerting themselves and took control of Thursday night's contest. Wheeling Jesuit pounced on Concord by a 16-2 start in the first five minutes and eased home, 94-56, for the men's basketball victory.

Pat Moseh netted the night's first four points, before Haywood Highsmith and Preston Boswell joined in as the three Cardinals (17-4/12-3 Mountain East Conference) combined for the 16 points in the opening 5:05 for the big 16-2 early lead. Concord (11-10/7-8 MEC) hit a 3-pointer on its next shot, but WJU never let it any closer the rest of the night as the margin grew to 25 points at half and there was no change in the final 20 minutes of action.

"Our guys were ready to play from the get go. We had a good practice yesterday and then so many things went well together tonight. Our team defense was how we wanted it to be and offensively we took high percentage shots," explained Danny Sancomb, WJU head coach. "(Tommy) Bolte is a really good offensive player, but Brent (Pegram) and our team defense did a great job on him. We limited him and made him work for everything. Our rebounding was good and we were just sharp."

For the third time in three games, Highsmith reached the 30-point mark with 30 points on 11 of 15 from the floor, including 4 of 6 from 3-point land. He recorded his 19th double-double in a 20-point and 11-rebound first-half effort, before he finished with 15 boards for the game.

Moseh connected on 8 of 14 attempts of his own for 20 points to go with five rebounds and three assists. Boswell downed 4 of 8 treys for 18 points to go with a career-high seven assists.

Jeremiah Wilson added 11 points and eight boards on the inside. Brendan Hoban gave quality minutes with eight points, three assists, three steals and two boards in 19 minutes.

WJU dominted the glass, 46-28, and forced 20 Concord turnovers.

Bolte led the Mt. Lions with 19 points, which is over 12 points under his season average.

WJU stays at home over the weekend when it plays host on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 3, to UVa.-Wise. Tip is set for 4 p.m.
