UVa-Wise Clips WJU in Final Minute

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Cavaliers proved to be a thorn in the side of the Cardinals again. UVa-Wise made up a 12-point deficit in the final 11 minutes and clipped the Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team in the final minute, 81-78, on Saturday.

Following a Cavaliers (9-13/7-9 Mountain East Conference) went layup to put them ahead by a point, the Cardinals WJU (17-5/12-4 MEC) retook the advantage on a Preston Boswell left-wing 3-pointer, 78-76, at 1:03 remaining. After two ensuing possessions, Chance Sheffey downed what would be the game-winning trey with just under nine seconds left. WJU raced up the court, but turned the ball over. The visitors made a pair of free throws, before Boswell's long game-tying 3-pointer hit off the rim to end the contest.

"A disappointing loss. Our defense in the second half and our execution were poor," explained Cardinals head coach Danny Sancomb. "We weren't tough down the stretch and gave the game away. We didn't execute on offense or defense in the last 17 to 18 minutes of the game and missed way too many layups, while they stepped up and made the play when it needed to be made."

Haywood Highsmith recorded his fourth 30-point outing in a row with 30 points on 13 of 20 shooting. He added 13 rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Boswell finished with 20 points, including 4 of 9 from 3-point land. Pat Moseh added 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Jeremiah Wilson chipped in eight points and eight boards.

Michal Seals led the UVa.-Wise effort with 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

WJU went out to a 21-10 early lead midway through the first half on back-to-back Highsmith and Boswell 3-pointers. The home margin went up to 12 points twice, before the Cardinals took a 40-30 halftime difference.

In the second half, following a Pat Moseh completed a 3-point play, WJU tied its largest lead of the game, 59-47, with 11:47 showing on the scoreboard. UVa-Wise went on an 11-2 run to get back into the contest and pulled to within three points, 61-58.

The Cavaliers kept edging closer until a Seals trey tied it, 69-69, and Taiwo Badmus free throws gave the visitors their first lead, 71-69, since 18:05 of the first half.

WJU returns to action next Thursday, Feb. 8, in a home contest against Charleston. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
