Wheeling Jesuit wins MEC opener versus Wesleyan, 60-52

WHEELING, W.Va. (Nov. 17) - Three players scored in double-figures to help the Wheeling Jesuit University women's basketball team pull out a 60-52 win over West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon in both team's Mountain East Conference (MEC) openers.

The Cardinals improve to 2-2 overall, 1-0 in the MEC, while the Bobcats drop to 0-1 in league play, 0-2 overall this season.

Senior Chenelle Moore (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) posted her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Junior guard Khira Burton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) finished with a team-bests of 15 points and four assists, while classmate Lauren Lipscomb (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington North) added 11 points and six rebounds.

The Cardinals led 5-2 at the seven-minute mark after an Ashley Rothert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont) three pointer, but the Bobcats closed the first quarter on a 12-5 run to take a 14-10 lead into the second quarter.

West Virginia Wesleyan held the lead for over eight minutes in the second quarter. Three pointers by Lipscomb and sophomore Kelsi Chapman (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) in the final minute and a half helped the Cardinals rally to take a 34-31 edge into halftime.

Wheeling Jesuit led by as many as four, 39-35, through the first six minutes of the third quarter. The Cardinal lead was sliced to two, 39-37, with 3:48 left in the period, but WJU managed to close the quarter out with 10-straight points to carry a 49-37 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Bobcats quickly scored eight-straight of their own to close the gap to 49-45 and force a WJU timeout with 6:09 left in the contest. West Virginia Wesleyan never got any closer and Burton sank all four of her free-throw attempts in the final two minutes to secure the win.

WVWC held a slight 46-to-44 edge in the rebound department. Eight of Moore's 15 rebounds came on the offensive glass. The Westerville native now only needs nine points to become the 24th player in school history to score 1,000 career points.

West Virginia Wesleyan was led by Abi Gabauer, who posted a game-high 18 points in the loss.

The Cardinals will travel to MEC-favorite Glenville State on Tuesday, November 20 for a tip at 5:30 p.m.
