GLENVILLE, W.Va. (Nov. 19) - Senior forward
Chenelle Moore (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) became the 24th member of the 1,000-point club, but the Cardinals came up short at Glenville State 123-88 Monday night inside the Waco Center in a Mountain East Conference (MEC) contest.
The Wheeling Jesuit University women's basketball team falls to 2-3 overall, 1-1 in the MEC. Glenville State, the preseason league-favorite, improves to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in MEC play this season.
Moore finished the game with her fourth double-double of the season with season-highs of 31 points and 17 rebounds and shot 13-of-23 from the field. Junior
Khira Burton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) added 21 points, while junior
Taliah Cashwell (South Charleston, W.Va./South Charleston) chipped in 15 in the game.
Glenville State pushed the pace with a full-court press and five-on-five-off subs nearly every minute. The Cardinals fell behind 35-11 after one quarter, behind nine Pioneer three pointers.
Moore, who entered the game sitting at 991 points, collected her 1,000th-point at the 5:41-mark of the second quarter on a layup. The Cardinals doubled their scoring output from the first quarter to the second, but still trailed 62-33 heading into halftime.
Wheeling Jesuit went on to score 55 points in the second half, but were unable to make much of a dent into the Glenville State lead. The Pioneers kept the pressure on and finished the game making 22 of 57 from three-point range (39 percent).
Moore is the third 1,000-point scorer in as many years. Former Cardinals Mariah Callan and
Monica Burns became the 22nd and 23rd 1,000-point scorers in program history last season.
Glenville State had nine players play at least 13 minutes and none more than 21 in the game.
The Cardinals will take a break for the holiday, before returning to the court next Monday, November 26 when they welcome Pitt.-Johnstown to the McDonough Center for a tip at 6 p.m.
