WHEELING, W.Va. (Nov. 13) - The Wheeling Jesuit University women's basketball team was defeated 92-61 by No. 11 Edinboro Tuesday evening in a non-conference game inside the McDonough Center.
The Cardinals fall to 1-2 overall this season. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots, ranked No. 11 in the Pre-season Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Top-25 poll, improve to 2-1 overall.
Senior forward
Chenelle Moore (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) recorded her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. She also added five blocked shots to her final line. Freshman guard
Ashley Rothert (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mariemont) chipped in 12 points in the loss.
Edinboro opened up an 8-3 lead in the first four minutes, but an 8-2 answer by the Cardinals gave them the lead with 5:01 left in the first quarter. Both teams traded baskets, before three pointers from junior
Taliah Cashwell (South Charleston, W.Va./South Charleston) and freshman
Allie Taylor (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) towards the end of the period gave Wheeling Jesuit a 26-20 lead entering the second quarter.
The Cardinals took their largest-lead of the night when a
Khira Burton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills) jump shot pushed the score to 28-20 in the opening minute of the second quarter. The momentum of the game shifted to Edinboro from there. The Fighting Scots out-scored the Cardinals 18-to-7 over the next nine minutes and took a 38-35 lead into halftime.
Back-to-back Moore layups reclaimed the lead for WJU in the first minute of the third quarter at 39-38, but eight-unanswered points for Edinboro gave the Scots a 47-40 lead. Edinboro went on to score 33 points in the third quarter and took a 71-50 lead into the final period. The Scots continued to knock down shots in the fourth quarter, before closing out the 92-61 win.
Edinboro built its second half lead by shooting 19-of-33 (58 percent) from the field in the second half, including 7-of-12 from three-point range.
The Fighting Scots dominated the glass and finished with a 52-to-32 advantage for the game. The Fighting Scots finished with 20 second-chance points, compared to just three for the Cardinals.
Wheeling Jesuit will open Mountain East Conference (MEC) play on Saturday, November 17 when it hosts West Virginia Wesleyan at 12 p.m.
The original tip-time was 2 p.m., but that has been pushed up to accommodate the NCAA Atlantic Regional Volleyball Championship Match that will be played later in the day.
