SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. (Nov. 10) - Led by a career-high 31 points from junior guard
Khira Burton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Walnut Hills), the Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team earned a 90-79 come-from-behind win over East Stroudsburg to open the season at the Shippensburg Wolf Bus Lines Classic Saturday afternoon.
Burton finished the game 8-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, and added a team-best five assists to her final line. Senior
Chenelle Moore (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) registered a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while junior
Lauren Lipscomb (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington North) chipped in 10 points in the win.
East Stroudsburg (0-1) controlled play in the first quarter against the Cardinals (1-0) and opened up a double-digit lead at 21-11 after one period. The Warriors added to their lead in the second quarter, leading by as many as 16, before heading into halftime with a 45-34 lead.
East Stroudsburg rebuilt its lead to 16, 50-34, in the first minute, before Wheeling Jesuit went on a 17-2 run over the next six minutes to draw within one at 52-51 with 3:43 left in the third quarter. The Cardinals managed to tie the game at 55-55 on a pair of Burton free throws with just under two minutes remaining in the period. East Stroudsburg converted a trey and two free throws of its own to build up a five-point lead in the final minute, but a three pointer by freshman
Allie Taylor (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg South) with five seconds on the clock closed the gap to two, 60-58, entering the fourth quarter.
Wheeling Jesuit dominated the final period. The Cardinals took their first lead of the game with 9:13 remaining in the game on a Taylor three pointer to make the score 63-62. The two sides traded baskets over the next six minutes, with East Stroudsburg clinging to a 75-74 lead with 3:40 left in the contest.
WJU dominated the final three minutes of the game. The Cardinals closed the game on a 16-4 run, including 10 of 12 from the charity stripe, to rally past East Stroudsburg and give Head Coach
Mike Llanas a win in his debut game.
After shooting 13 of 31 (42 percent) from the field and 3-of-10 from three-point range in the first half, the Cardinals connected on 16 of 31 (52 percent) attempts and 5-of-7 from distance. Moore got going in the second half as well, recording 20 of her 24 points in the final two periods. The Warriors shot 21-of-40 (53 percent) in the first half, but slumped to a 9-of-32 (28 percent) performance in the second 20 minutes.
East Stroudsburg's Tiffany Lapotsky led the Warriors with 26 points in the loss.
The Cardinals will look to close out the weekend with a pair of wins when they take on host-Shippensburg tomorrow, Sunday, November 11 at 1 p.m.
