SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. (Nov. 10) - The Wheeling Jesuit University men's basketball team was defeated 91-71 by Millersville to conclude the Shepherd Classic Saturday.
The loss sends the Cardinals to 0-2 early in the season, while the Marauders improve to 1-1 overall.
Freshman
Tariq Woody (Canton, Mich./Novi) led the team with 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting and added eight rebounds. Freshmen
Franck Kamgain (Kansas City, Mo./DME Sports Academy) and
Jay Gentry (Milwaukee, Wisc./Brown Deer) also finished in double-figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Millersville controlled play from the opening-tip and established a double-digit lead at 16-6 with 13:06 left in the first half. The Maruaders kept the pressure on the Cardinals and maintained the lead, before taking a 51-30 advantage into halftime.
Wheeling Jesuit 72-40 after the second media timeout and had its best run of the afternoon. The Cardinals out-scored Millersville 16-5 to cut the deficit to 77-56 with just over seven minutes left in the game, but the margin was too much to overcome and the Cardinals left the Shepherd Classic with their second loss of the weekend.
Wheeling Jesuit was limited to a 24 of 65 (37 percent) performance from the field. Millersville finished the game shooting 34 of 63 (54 percent) from the field, including 14 of 26 from three-point range.
The Cardinals out-scored Millersville 41-40 in the second half.
Five players scored in double-figures for the Marauders, including a game-high 24 from Marcus Adkison.
The Cardinals will return to Wheeling for their home-opener on Saturday, November 17 when they welcome West Virginia Wesleyan. The tip is set for 4 p.m., however with the potential for the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Volleyball Tournament being played at the McDonough Center on the same day, the start time may change.
